6/7 March '04 RESULTS SERVICE - Husky Sport Enduro Racing team 2004 ACU 2-day British Enduro Championship: Round 1: Breckland Enduro, Thetford, Norfolk Husky Sport team rider Daryl Bolter [above] shines at round one of the '04 British Enduro Championship The long awaited opening round of the 2004 British Enduro Championship, the Diss MCC organised Breckland Enduro, saw Husky Sport rider Daryl Bolter produce one of the weekends most noteworthy performances as the youngster powered his way to victory in the eighth litre two-stroke class on day one. Backing it up on day two with a solid runner-up class finish, Daryl now lies level on points with the reigning 125cc British champion, Scot Chris Hay, with three rounds of the series remaining. Undeterred by the long days and tight check times faced by the Championship class, Daryl's eight second winning margin at the top of the 125cc class on day one was the result of an off season spent preparing himself for the move the BEC's premier class. Faced with the unenviable task of being the first rider onto the challenging Breckland course, Daryl barely put a foot wrong on day one but learnt an important lesson on the third and final test of the day - it ain't over 'til it's over. Posting a test time just two seconds slower than he did on lap two Daryl dropped from third to fifth in the overall classification. Riding slightly off his game on test one early on Sunday morning, Daryl had to fight his way back from outside the top 10 to claim a highly impressive fourth overall at the days close. "I'm really happy with my weekend. Day one was a bit weird really because being the first rider on the course, in my first real event in the Championship class, took a bit getting used to. Being the first rider on the course wasn't easy, especially early on day two after the over night rain. "I was in third on day one until the final test when Paul Malin and Ryan Voase managed to get ahead of me. I didn't really have a bad test; they were just a few seconds quicker than me. Things didn't start too well on day two; I think I was down in 11th overall after the first test. I managed to get myself back to fourth overall and second in the 125s so I'm really happy with the way I rode. It's definitely not been an easy event, but I've enjoyed it." | Over 175cc class Chris Hockey [above] produced two solid performances to claim fifth in class on day one and fourth on day two. Still adjusting to two-stroke machinery after a season spent campaigning Husqvarna's 450cc four-stroke, Chris would have performed better if it hadn't been for a costly mistake on day one's opening test. "Day one was ruined by my first special test - I ended up coming out of a corner, spinning around and facing the wrong direction, which was frustrating. I then pushed too hard trying to make up for the mistake and made a few more small mistakes. I also found it a little difficult to adjust to racing a two-stroke again after being on a four-stroke last year. "The second day was really good. I started off riding really smoothly on the opening test and gradually pushed harder and harder towards the finish to claim ninth. I then moved up to eighth overall after the second test and held that position. The conditions were really demanding on day two but I'm well chuffed with the way things went." Joining Hockey in the Over 175cc class, Welshman Lee Jones found the presence of Paul Malin on his minute useful as he was able to tag onto the back of the former British motocross champion to clear the events tight checks. Having not spent as much time on a bike in recent weeks as he would have liked due to bad weather at his home in South Wales, Lee's performance showed that he now has the consistency to gain the results that his talents deserve. "Day one wasn't too bad but day two was much better. Having Paul Malin on my minute really helped as I was able to follow him on the tight checks, which made things a lot easier. On the test things went pretty well too, especially on the last two test of the second day. I'm happy enough with the way the weekend went." | |
